We’re on a mission to change our societal approach to mental health
We’re in a mental health pandemic
By 2030 mental health problems will cause more mortality globally than any other disease
Mental health services are overwhelmed. Our clinicians are seeing first hand that our current approaches are not working.

Increasing stressors in the modern world
People and systems face unprecedented stress that isn’t properly understood

Reactive models of care
Mental health support shouldn’t begin when someone visits their GP or is already in crisis

We’re lonely and disconnected
Our society celebrates productivity and enables loneliness, impacting our brains which need connection and community
Inspired by connected cultures
MOAI 模合 (mo-ai)
“Meeting for a common purpose”
Nestled in the heart of Japan, lies a secret to long and healthy lives. In the village of Ogimi people thrive, with many living beyond a century, thanks to their close-knit social groups known as MOAIs. These small, lifelong support networks foster belonging and connection, enhancing both physical and psychological health.
Community connectedness and belonging is basic human need. A focus of much scientific research, studies have found that a sense of belonging and connection is vital for our wellbeing.

For organisations, teams, groups and individuals
We bring the science of mental health to you and the MOAIs you are already part of
MOAI’s Mission
Meet our founders
Dr Patrick Davey and Dr Oliver Shipston-Sharman met whilst working together in community mental health.
Inspired by their work, and driven to do things differently, they came together to create MOAI -and a new way of approaching mental health.
